The worst language I ever had to use is that of TeX/LaTeX. (Perl is a close second. HTML5 CSS Javascript is striving to surpass the two.)
But at least TeX lets you do things you cannot do with any other software.
The worst language IN RELATION TO WHAT IT CAN DO must be the git command line interface. Proof: the sheer number of websites that try to explain how you do even the simplest operations, like creating a branch or uploading your changes. All in vain...

What good and what bad would that do to society, from personal connections, to information and disinformation sharing, to people in in medical support groups to people in political hate groups, to personal safety and stalking, to local and global communities?
I’m genuinely curious because there’s a lot of good stuff on there and a lot of bad stuff.

@… Tim, I would like to get your opinion on the @ Fediverse account situation on threads.
To keep it brief, they've been really unhelpful to folks on there who ask questions. Furthermore, until I kinda forced them to be active last night, they posted 1 time in 6 months.
I feel at best, it's a massively missed opportunity to spread correct and useful information. At worst, it's deliberately sitting on a username and using it to spread bad information to users that are completely uninformed.
I think it's not doing any good to interact with that account, given it's lack of knowledge, knack for speaking in broken English and straight bad information.
What say you? It sucks so bad that this is happening and I wish there was something we could do, besides trying to not push that account and avoid interacting with it.😩

Google's Education VP wants us to believe AI is the classroom's new calculator, but this is a terrible analogy:

3. Rare floating point errors aside, calculators do not invent false answers.
4. Calculators are based on math principles; LLMs are based on no principles.

Wondering if this is a good place for an LLM code extruder? “Write unit tests that cover as many possible lines of code.” You wouldn’t get *smart* unit tests, but even dumb coverage is immensely better than none. Because a lot of the bugs unit tests find are dumb shit anyhow. And retroactively improving test coverage is boring.

Thinking about switching my personal tech #blog from #hashnode to #ghost / Ghost(Pro), as this seems to be what all the cool kids are using these days. However, I don’t want to self-host Ghost, as I don’t want to deal with running updates and signing up to a bunch of extra services to get newsletter sending etc. to work. As I am not planning to introduce any premium tiers or anything like that, I wonder if any of the advantages of ghost over Hashnode are even relevant to me, especially considering the price of at least $9 a month for Ghost.
What do people recommend these days? Should I stick to what I already have with hashnode (at least until they inevitably turn evil one day, as apparently all services must), or is there a compelling reason to switch to ghost today?

This is a good point. I’m a big proponent of *provider diversity*. Every cloud service you use should have a different login. Every piece of data you create should have an easily-accessible copy in your local file system. Everything on your computer should be backed up offsite with a separate cloud backup.
Do not put all your eggs into one cloud service basket. Do not use the same login for unrelated services. This rules out most of Apple’s cloud products for me.

»People ask me to write. I don’t want to write. My writing would be very very dark. I would not be happy to identify the human race with any kind of respect. And yet I’m not – I have to modify that – I don’t go around hating everybody I meet, and I have friends, and I do trust in general. But mankind as a whole – no. An animal. A cruel animal.«

Two mule deer bucks sparing during the rut season on Deer Ridge. October 2013

Photo. Two mule deer bucks are standing head to head with their antlers interlocking, on Deer Ridge, in Rocky Mountain National Park. This “sparring” happens exclusively during the rut, or mating season, (the fall, basically) as the males compete with each other for the favors to be bestowed upon them by the does, who surreptitiously, and nonchalantly watch the boys wrasslin’ in order to pick the best one to mate with, or so the males think, anyway. They’re guys, ffs. It’s what guys do. October…

Genuine question: Do people who write primarily in MS Word not find it actively hostile to the process of writing?
Case in point: as I'm editing a manuscript with track changes enabled, it will regularly delete between 1 and 15 words that I've just written. This seems to happen mainly when it's auto-correcting a regular quote to curly quote, or multiple hyphens to an em dash. But it's not that predictable. (I'm using the web version, in MS Edge, since I'm on Lin…

Updated my profile a bit finally to reflect my current personality and favorite topics. Removed references to being a streamer because streaming platforms are so broken and I haven't streamed in SO long.🤷‍♂️
Maybe it'll help some more people who were hesitant to follow me based on some info there. I want to converse with tons of people. That's really important to me, to see others views on things.
Edit: cool thing I just realized, if you link your Fedi profile on Threads and do the same on Mastodon, the threads link is "verified" automatically. That's pretty neat.

By the by, Computer Power and Human Reason is probably one of the most important books in computer science and literally everyone should read it (it’s not very technical).
It argues that 1) machines and humans are innately different and 2) there is tasks that computers should never be made to do, regardless of if they can actually do it.
Extremely pertinent to the AI hype, by probably the topmost authority in AI, the MIT professor who invented the ELiZA program.

Trump’s bizarre, vindictive incoherence has to be heard in full to be believed
Trump’s tone is decidedly more vengeful this time around, as he seeks to reclaim the White House after a bruising loss that he insists was a stolen election.
This alone is a cause for concern, foreshadowing what a second Trump presidency could look like.
But he’s also, quite frequently, rambling and incoherent, running off on tangents that would grab headlines for their oddness should any other …

It's so interesting how quickly things can change and make your whole day better and brighter. I'm starting to see some interaction on Threads regarding my post about this fake Fediverse account.
I also decided to pin the post to my threads profile so that anyone who clicks my profile will see that as one of the first things.
Also, I am starting to get follow relationships with more talented folks there! Very neat tech people starting to follow me and realize what I'm trying to do. :FeelsGoodMan:

It would be terrible and unethical if anyone automated an LLM that feeds deliberately wrong answers back to sites that steal user content and sell it to AI companies, so they choke on it.
No one should ever do this. It would be very wrong.

People here hate algorithms and I get it. I don't get any engagement on platforms that have them.
However, if I don't tag something with enough relevant tags here, I get the same experience and I have 800 followers, and if I tag TOO many things, someone bitches at me to stop doing that.
There HAS to be a better way to do this...
And I might not get engagement on this because I just don't know what to tag it now, in fear of offending *someone* with my tags...😩🤦‍♂️
